Cordero bags 7 swim golds

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Swimming League tanker Delia Angela Cordero brought her gold medal total to seven as she emerged the most outstanding swimmer in the girls 13-14 years in the Singapore Island Country Club swimming championships which ended yesterday.

Cordero, daughter of PSL national coach Denis Cordero, capped her two-day performance with golden efforts in the 50m free sprint in 29.3 seconds and the 50m butterfly in 30.1 seconds to win the coveted championship trophy for the Philippines.

Cordero, 14, earlier won the 200m individual medley in 2:35.16, 100m butterfly in 1:07, 50m backstroke in 33.81 seconds, 50m freestyle in 29 seconds and 100m backstroke in 1:14.11 and finished second in the 50m breaststroke in 39 seconds.

Miguel Thruelen, coached by his father Manny, bagged three silver and one bronze medals.

The age group competition drew over 150 swimmers from Almagary, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

The Corderos were given an all-expense-paid trip courtesy of Growee Vitamins, Singapore-based Sunshine Dalen and Chito Rivera.

“We are thankful for the support we are getting from the PSL and our sponsors. It gives our coaches and swimmers the chance to compete abroad and get a taste of foreign competition,” said coaches Cordero and Thruelen.

PSL president Susan Papa said three more international tournaments are lined up for members of the PSL till the end of the year.
