Tams' Garcia revving up in MVP race

MANILA, Philippines - Barely into the first round elims in the UAAP, FEU’s RR Garcia is showing he’s ready for the MVP derby.

Garcia, the talented sophomore guard from Zamboanga, dished out a pair of clutch efforts to help the Tams keep their win run going after six games.

The former national youth standout averaged 17 points, 3.5 assists, three rebounds, 1.5 steals and a block to power the Tams to the victories and clinch the Accel/Fil-Oil UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week honors.

“He is playing consistent basketball and he makes his teammates look better. For me, he is the best point guard in college basketball today,” said FEU coach Glen Capacio.

Garcia saved the best for last in a come-from-behind, double overtime 84-80 win over La Salle last Thursday and then came through again in a 74-65 romp over Adamson last Sunday.

The Tams thus remained the only unbeaten team in the league with a 6-0 slate. They go for the sweep against the UST Tigers on Saturday.

“My main goal is to help the team as much as I can,” said the soft-spoken Garcia in Filipino.

Garcia edged Ateneo’s Eric Salamat and University of the East’s Paul Lee for the award backed by Terrilicious meat products and sponsored by Accel and Fil-Oil.
