Bulldogs on the loose, rip Falcons
MANILA, Philippines - National University made big defensive stops down the stretch to nip Adamson, 67-65, for its first win in the FilOil Flying V Tanduay First Five Pre-Season Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
The Bulldogs worked on an efficient defense together and went to veteran guard Joseph Hermosisima for clutch baskets as they chalked up their first win in four games.
Hermosisima fired three crucial three pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 21 points while Emanuel Mbe got away with a game-high 24-point output.
“We are happy we finally got the monkey off our back,” said National U coach Eric Gonzales.
“Doubts had haunted our game resulting in breakdowns. Today, the guys just believed in themselves. My veterans finally delivered, specially Joseph (Hermosisima) and Jewel Ponferrada,” Gonzales added.
A layup by Ponferrada followed by a jumper by Hermosisima had the Bulldogs opening a 64-60 lead.
Failing to stop the Bulldogs’ endgame charge, the Falcons suffered a second loss against three wins.
Lester Alvarez topscored with 13 points while Alex Nuyles added 12 points for the Falcons.
Earlier, University of the Philippines topped University of Perpetual Help, 89-86, for its fifth win.
Rookie Sensation Mike Silungan made another brilliant performance, coming through with 22 points while Woody Co and Martin Reyes both scored 17 and Alvin Padilla chipped in 11. – With report from Koji Lorenzo Echeminada
