MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo shrugged off the rust of a two-week layoff as it toppled University of San Jose-Recoletos, 25-17, 25-18, 26-24, yesterday to formalize its stint in the quarterfinal round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Thai import Sontaya Keawbundit bucked back spasms and came away with 14 kills for a 17-point output while Fille Cainglet added 11 points despite playing in only two sets for the Lady Eagles, who stayed in shape by playing tune-up games with their men’s team.
The win was only Ateneo’s second since beating St. Benilde in straight sets last April 11 but it was enough to assure the Lady Eagles’ stint in the next round of the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and presented by PLDT MyDSL.
“We train every other day and play tune-games against our men’s team for them to stay in game shape,” said Ateneo coach Clint Malazo.
The Lady Jaguars tried their best to extend the match but could only force a 24-all count in the third before dropping the next two points and the match.
With a 0-3 card in Group B, USJR needs to win against Lyceum on Thursday to force a playoff for the last quarters berth against St. Benilde, which closed out with a 1-3 mark in the tournament organized by Sports Vision and backed by Mikasa, Accel and Mighty Bond.
San Sebastian College showed its readiness for this year’s crown as subdued defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23, to complete a sweep of the Group A elims.
Jeng Bualee made 25 hits which reigning NCAA MVP Joy Benito added 16 points for the Lady Stags, who outduelled the Tigresses, winners in the last two conferences, in 1:14.
“I’m not concerned in this game because we are already in the quarterfinals and there are still many things that can happen. But still I’m happy with the win,” said SSC coach Roger Gorayeb. “What’s important is what happens in the finals, that’s why we should take it one game at a time.
