Valderrama ready for Asian moto
MANILA, Philippines - Officials of Valderrama, Antique, led by Mayor Joyce Roquero, are rolling out the red carpet for foreign and local riders competing in the first Evelio Javier Invitational Motocross Championship this weekend at a newly-constructed racing circuit in the bustling town.
Roquero herself leads the committee that will welcome all the participants who will be treated to native revelry and hospitality in fiesta-like atmosphere that will mark their stay in Valderrama. A Manila-based band will perform for the participants and bike enthusiasts during the awarding rites.
All participants will arrive in Valderrama today to test the new track that conforms to international standards, with actual competition in the event, the third leg of the prestigious FIM Asian Championship series, starting on Saturday.
Roquero said preparations for the event will showcase the robust achievement gained by the once-sleepy town in many aspects of local governance and are intended to rouse the interest of the local population in sports like motorbike racing.
“We have to keep pace with the progressive developments around us. We have to tap the undiscovered potentials of the youths in our area and that means giving them the right avenue to display their potential. Sports is a good opportunity,” said the lady mayor, who is running unopposed for a second term.
Organized by the National Motor Sports and Safety Association led by Macky Carapiet, the Valderrama race, named after the late favorite son of Antique, will showcase just how far local riders have gone in the event long ruled by foreign stars.
Former sportswriter Ray Roquero, now a director of the sponsoring Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, is convinced Filipino entries will give foreign riders a tough run for their money due to their ‘homecourt’ advantage.
“I think Filipino riders will really prove their worth in this race. Local fans will root for them and that will push them to the limits,” said Roquero, who has put up a handsome and intricately carved perpetual championship trophy to the winner.
