Boyes rules UAE 8-Ball
MANILA, Philippines - Karl Boyes of Great Britain defeated Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 13-12, to rule the Etisalat WPA World 8-Ball Championship 2010 at the Fujairah Tennis Club in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates late Saturday.
Boyes wons the top prize of $17,000 as he joined an elite group of British world champions that include Daryl Peach (9-Ball) and Darren Appleton (10-Ball).
On the road to the race-to-13 championship round, Boyes defeated Filipino Venancio Tanio, 10-5, in the quarterfinals then subdued Russian Ruslan Chinakhov, 10-2, in the semifinals to arrange an-all European final against Feijen.
Feijen, on the other hand, downed Andreas Roshkowski of Germany, 10-6, in the round-of-8 and 2008 World 10-Ball champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain, 10-6, in the Final 4.
Other Filipinos who took earlier exits were Ronato Alcano, Marlon Manalo, Dennis Orcollo, Lee Vann Corteza, Jeffrey de Luna, Joven Alba, Antonio Gabica, Lee Vann Corteza, Jeffrey de Luna, Rubern Bautista and Kim Aquino.
This is the first time a Filipino failed to advance in the world 8-ball finals since its inauguration on 2005.
