Lyceum bares basketball tryouts

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Lyceum of the Philippines University men’s basketball team is gearing for another successful season this school year in an effort to sustain the gains of 2009.

Handled by coach Bonnie Tan and assistant coach Christopher Brower, the Pirates are assembling another young but talented team in time for several collegiate and commercial tournaments starting with the MBL Open this month.

“We’re looking forward to another successful year for the Pirates,” said Tan, who piloted the Intramuros-based Pirates to respectable showings in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League, Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association (ISAA), Nike Summer League and the Millennium Basketball League.

“This year, we are hoping to assemble a young but talented team to play in several leagues in the calendar. The team we have in mind should be able to sustain the school’s long winning tradition,” said Tan.

The Pirates ruled the first Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association (ISAA) last November, Millennium Basketball League (MBL) Open in 2008/2009.

This month, Tan is inviting potential student-athletes who would like to play for the Pirates to attend an open tryout on April 12-14. The tryout is open for incoming freshmen and transferees not more than 23 years old.

Tan said the LPU offers athletic scholarships and other benefits for those who will qualify.

Interested players are advised contact the LPU athletics office at tels. 527-8251 to 56 local 120.
