MANILA, Philippines - GMs Wesley So and Eugene Torre will make the ceremonial moves to kick off the first Edgardo Pamintuan Chess Cup tomorrow at the Marquee Mall at Bgy Pulung Maragul in Angeles City.
The event is expected to draw a huge field with hundreds of players and enthusiasts getting the rare chance to meet two of the country’s top players.
“Part of providing support to our athletes is giving them the opportunity to see the people who inspire them,” said Pamintuan, former chairman of the Subic-Clark Alliance and Development Council under whose honor the tournament is held.
The event is a seven-round Swiss system tournament open to the first 150 registrants.
Aside from chess and basketball, Pamintuan said the local government should also promote and support other indoor sports such as badminton, taekwondo, boxing, billiards and table tennis. – Ding Cervantes
