Cansino, Dizon enter Head jr tennis semis

CAGAYAN DE ORO , Philippines  – Top seed Juan Paolo Cansino stamped his class in the 16 and 18-under categories, but it was Jeni Dizon who pulled off the biggest upset in the quarterfinal round of the Smart presents HEAD Junior Tennis Tour Satellite Circuit 2010 at the Nazareth Tennis Club here over the weekend.

Cansino, the pride of Davao City, outlasted Bernard Bryan Sanchez, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (10-3), in the 16-under category to earn a seat in the Final Four of this event co-presented by Smart Sports in partnership with Chris Sports and HEAD.

Cansino later made it a double celebration when he also secured a semifinal spot in the 18-under category when he upstaged Jorou Librodo in a grueling three-set encounter.

Cansino won, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (10-8), to advance in this ranking tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association.

But it was Dizon who stole the spotlight when she pulled the rug from under top seed Andrea Regino in the girls’ 16-under quarterfinals.

Dizon came back strong after losing the second set and beat her rival in a tie breaker in the deciding third set (10-8) to score a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 victory and advance into the next round.

Other players who advanced into the semifinal round of their respective categories were:

`18-under boys - No.3 seed Clee Jay Albano, who defeated Emir Cariga, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) and Bryan Saarenas, who stunned Rogelio Estanio Jr., 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9).
