Barrenechea rules Field Archery Cup
MANILA, Philippines - Fermin Barrenechea held off Earl Yap in the finale to top the first Philippine Field Archery Cup at the Team Goma Sport Shooting Range at Hill Top, Antipolo last weekend.
Barrenechea outclassed Yap for top honors with Richard Dee and Winston Lee coming in third and fourth, respectively, in the event held for the first time in the country under the supervision of Yap himself with support from Benel Archery.
The tournament set-up complied with all FITA rules for a field tournament. But unlike target archery that is held on flat grounds with fixed and marked distances, field archery tournaments are held on hilly grounds and require the archers to shoot at targets with marked or unmarked distances and at different angles.
In the qualifying rounds, Yap finished first with 726 points, followed by Dee with 699, Cabral with 679, Barrenechea with 665 and Karl Achacoso with 656.
In the finals, Barrenechea capitalized on an error by Yap on the second target and went on to win the event sponsored by Team Goma Sport of Richard Gomez, Potato Corner and Bamboo Asia Grill of Joe Magsaysay and Benel Archery which provided target faces, target butts and other logistics.
National mainstays Aya Paz and Kit Cojuangco joined but did not finish due to personal commitments.
