Gilas ends Australian trip, smothers Comets
MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas overpowered the Sydney City Comets, 81-73, to cap its impressive tour campaign in Australia last Sunday.
It was the fifth victory against a draw by the Nationals, who beat NSWIS, 82-63, the Canberra Gunners, 101-84, Australia’s second national team, 79-73, and Australia Under-19 squad, 78-76.
The Filipinos settled for a 73-all draw with Australia’s second national team.
The Filipinos are scheduled to be back in Manila this week for a brief rest before flying again to Serbia on Sunday as they try to familiar themselves with the European brand of basketball.
“We did great in Australia and we hope to keep on improving with the Serbian trip,” said Smart Gilas manager Frankie Lim.
This marks the second straight year that the Filipinos would be playing strong, taller Serbian club teams as part of their buildup for this year’s Guangzhou Asian Games and next year’s FIBA-Asia Championship.
