RTU dominates SCUAA meet in six more sports

MANILA, Philippines - Rizal Technological University ruled six more sports – chess, arnis, badminton, beach volleyball, futsal and sepak takraw – to cap another banner year in the 22nd State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA)-National Capital Region in various venues around Metro Manila.

RTU, bannered by national junior campaigner Paulo James Florendo and Richelieu Salcedo III, swept the men’s chess competitions with a seven-round aggregate of 20 points.

Polytechnic University of the Philippines finished second with 16 points, while Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology had 13.5 points for third.

Florendo also took the individual gold on board one with five points in six matches, edging Kenneth Ryan Sumile of Philippine State College of Aeronautics and Narciso Gumila of EARIST.

Salcedo, a gold medalist in the Asian Age-Group Championships in 2008, also bagged the gold medal on board two with six wins in six matches.

Nathaniel Gravillo of PUP and Benjamin Bugarin of Philippine Normal University finished second and third, respectively.    

Other individual gold medalists were Kritz Albelar (RTU), Mauric de los Santos (PUP) and Michael Efmar Reyes (PHILSCA).

In women’s play, RTU copped the gold with 21.5 points, three points ahead of EARIST and 4.5 points clear of PUP.

The individual medalists were Melflore Soriano (PUP), Katherine Gay Florendo (RTU), Lorelie Cuizon (RTU), Carren Biscocho (EARIST) and Dovelyn Navarro (EARIST).

In arnis, RTU bagged seven golds and four silvers to rule the men’s division while its women’s team copped four golds and four silvers to emerge champion.

PHILSCA finished second with three golds, two silvers and four bronzes, while PUP came in third with 1-4-2 in the men’s division.

PNU (4-3-3) and PUP (1-4-2) finished second and third, respectively, in the distaff side. 

RTU also swept the men’s and women’s titles in badminton with 6-0 win-loss records.
