Angping, Razon guests in RP Swim League meet

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Sports Commission chairman Harry Angping and Gen. Avelino Razon have been invited to be the guests of honor in the RP Swimming League meet which starts at 7 a.m. today at the Rizal Memorial swimming pool.

Over 500 swimmers from Metro Manila and nearby provinces are competing in 148 medal events for eight years below, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17 years, male and female, of the event organized by Olympian Susan Papa.

The clubs represented are from Manila, Pampanga, Batangas, Dagupan, Pangasinan, Malabon, Novaliches, Quezon City, Marikina, Antipolo, Pasay, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas and Parañaque.

Entry fees were waived by the Aquatic Sports Association of the Philippines headed by lawyer Ma. Luz Arzaga-Mendoza to make the competition accessible to all interested age group swimmers.

Angping personally approved the free use of the swimming pool to give more swimmers an opportunity to showcase their talents and evaluate their performance.

The meet is hosted by the RP Swimming League, a confederation of swimming clubs all over the Philippines, whose aim is to promote swimming as a competitive sport to develop local talents for international competitions.

It is sponsored by Growee vitamins, coach Darren Evangelista, Fil- American Sonia Papa Baltazar, Canadian coach Wilfred Arzaga, water polo veteran Dale Evangelista, parents of the Susan Papa Academy and individual patrons Theresa Alvarez, Cathy Lorbes, May Davide and Agnes Dos Remedios who contributed the medals and trophies.

Coaches Manny Thruelen, Dra. Susan Benasa, Dennis Cordero, Elmer Matienzo and Dra. Vicky Santos offered their services free.

Razon will be on hand to open the meet and award the medals with Dale Evangelista, member of water polo team that won the silver in the Laos Southeast Asian Games.
