Abalos, Acuna top Chair Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Richie Abalos shot 33 points to bag the overall championship while Eric Acuna captured the low gross plum with 40 points in the 10th Camp John Hay Chairman’s Cup at the Camp John Hay Golf Club in Baguio last weekend.

Abalos, a 10 handicapper, came through with a net 23-point output under the Stableford scoring system to clinch the top honors in the two-day event which drew a huge field of 200-plus participants.

Acuna, with a 19 handicap, took the low gross crown with his 40-point performance in the tournament held in honor of CJH chairman Robert John Sobrepeña and sponsored by Wilson Sports, Golforce, Inc., Warbird Securities and Investigation Agency, Gatorade, Daniel Motors, Inc., Asia Pacific Golf Corp. and Poblador Bautista & Reyes Law Offices.

Mars Acuna, a 6-handicapper, came away with 42 points to cop the Class A crown with Kim Hwa Rang and Monet Garcia finishing second and third, respectively, with identical 39 points in the tournament backed by Camp John Hay Manor, Fairways & Bluewater Golf & Country Club, Camp John Hay Development Corp., The Manila Southwoods Manor, The Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club, The Baguio Country Club, Forest Hills Golf & Country Club, and Sherwood Hills Country Club.

Cocktails were held at the 19th Tee, CJH Suites while the CJH Golf Club hosted the awards rites where LCD TVs were raffled off, including golf packages from CJH and Southwoods, accommodation for two at the Boracay sands, golf for two at Fairways and Bluewater via Zest Air, Wilson golf set and travel bags from The Travel Club.

Jeong Sek Jun shot 43 points to rule Class B over William Campos and Henry Kiley, who placed second and third, respectively, with similar 39 points, while Acuna also captured the Class C diadem over Pol Mayos and Fernando Tizon, who turned in 39 and 38 points, respectively.

Ben Ayoong carded 43 points then nipped Ray Olarte in the countback to win the Class D crown while Tony Espiritu placed third with 40 points in the tournament supported by Dusit Thani Manila, Rizgolf Sports Marketing, Zest Airways, The Travel Club, Boracay Sands Hotel, Le Chef and Federal Management and Maintenance, Inc.

Dina Eden bested the field with 43 points as she took the ladies crown over Cho Myeong Suk and Isee Tizon, who both had 42 points while Thirdy Escano fired 50 Molave points to top the guest division over Neptali Gonzales and Noel Sebastian, who made 49 and 46 points, respectively.

Other fun hole winners were Ahn Joon (longest drive) and Bareng Ebb and Frank Ratcliffe (nearest to the pins).
