MANILA, Philippines - Defending varsity basketball champion Philippine Women’s University grabbed the No. 1 spot despite dropping its final elimination round match by default in the eighth Women’s Colleges Sports Association (WCSA) recently.
PWU beat La Consolacion College Manila, St. Scholastica’s College and Assumption College before yielding to Miriam College on Dec. 6 because of the absence of its coaching staff.
Despite the win, Miriam still failed to advance to the next round with a 1-3 mark.
The elimination round ended on Dec. 13 with La Consolacion besting Miriam, 50-41, and St. Scholastica routing Assumption, 59-39, at the SSC gym. Except for Miriam, all three teams wound up with 2-2 slates.
In the employees division, La Consolacion beat PWU, 82-74, to tie its victim for the lead at 2-1.
The Final Four round of varsity division will be played on Jan. 10.
