Koreans overall champs in Sherwood golf for cause

TRECE MARTIRES, Cavite, Philippines – Choi Kyung-goun and partner Hwang Yang-hee stole the spotlight as they combined for a net 11-under-par 61 in the best ball system to win the overall net championship of the 2009 Chairman’s Cup, aka “Golf for a Cause,” held at the Nicklaus signature course of Sherwood Hills Golf Club.

The Koreans’ triumph in the fund-raiser for the victims of typhoon “Pepeng” and storm “Ondoy” overshadowed the low gross team crown by Shean Bedi and national team member Tonlits Asistio, who combined for the day’s best gross of three-under-par 69.

Robert John Sobrepeña, Sherwood Hills chair, announced during a brief speech that all the proceeds of the Chairman’s Cup would be donated to a relief-giving group which helps victims of the calamities.

Pong Manuel and wife Lia pooled in a net 62 to rule Group1. Quito Mendoza and Andrew Carreon scored the same output to top Group II in the one-day affair presented by Fil-Estate Urban Dev. Co.

Jeff Bernaldez churned out a net 68 to grab the tiara in the sponsors and guest division in the event which had Golforce Inc., Federal Management, Club Leisure, CJH Dev. Co., CJH Golf Club, Manila Southwoods, Isuzu Phils., and Kork Inc. as major sponsors.

Sherwood Hills member Fujio Goto aced the sixth but never went home with either hole-in-one prizes Chery car or Texas Eagle golf cart because those were staked in other par-three holes.
