MANILA, Philippines - The UE Junior Warriors Team B clobbered Virgen Guadalupe High School, 87-75, at the start of the Northball League yesterday at the Bagong Pag-Asa Covered Court.
The win was a big headstart in the basketball program launched by rookie head coach Mark Herrera to give members of the junior training pool the exposure they need for upcoming basketball tournaments.
Herrera, also head coach of the Jr. PBA grand slam champion PBA QC-Talk ‘n Text and the national RP 13-under team, said his young wards are making significant progress under the program, which is supported by PE director Rodrigo Roque and Red Warriors team manager Dr. Jesus Tanchanco.
“The new batch of players we have recruited are younger and less experienced, and we need these tournaments to train them,” said Herrera, who recently attended a coaches meeting in Bangkok.
“I intend to create a new basketball program that will provide a strong base for the future of UE high school basketball,” he added.
From second worst two seasons ago, the Junior Warriors, under Herrera, finished in the middle of the standings in the just-concluded UAAP junior basketball tournament.
“New Beginning is what this team is all about and that is what I aim to bring to the team, and hopefully to the UE high school basketball program,” Herrera said.
