JLF, WNU dispute PCC Visayas crown

MANILA, Philippines - West Negros University of Bacolod and John Lacson Foundation of Iloilo swept their first two assignments to arrange a showdown for the Visayas regional championship of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) at the WNU gym in Bacolod.

The WNU Mustangs outclassed the Leyte Colleges Cougars, 101-53, and the Bohol International School Cruisers, 103-53.

The John Lacson Dolphins, on the other hand, trounced Dumaguete titlists Siliman University Stallions, 71-43, and Ormoc champion Western Leyte Colleges, 89-61.

The winner between the Mustangs and the Dolphins will advance to the zonal qualifying games set Nov. 4-8 in Cebu City.

The opening ceremonies of the PLDT-SMART sponsored regional meet were graced by WNU officials headed by chief operating officer Tisha Angeli Sy and vice-president for athletics Anthony Carlo Agustin, PCCL chairman Reynaldo Gamboa and national tournament director Joe Lipa.

Completing the Cebu zonal cast are Mindanao regional champion Holy Trinity College Wildcats of General Santos City, NAASCU champion San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite Baycats, Adamson University Falcons (UAAP fifth placer), Arellano University Chiefs (NCAA fifth placer), and the CESAFI second, third and fourth placers.

The top four teams in the Cebu zonal games earn seats in the “Sweet 16” finals together with the early qualifiers Ateneo Blue Eagles, University of the East Red Warriors, FEU Tamaraws, UST Growling Tigers, San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags, San Beda Red Lions, JRU Heavy Bombers and the Letran Knights.
