Canlubang, Alabang duel for crown
MANILA, Philippines - The 2009 WGAP (Women’s Golf Association of the Phils.) circuit comes down to a deciding leg as Alabang and Canlubang dispute the overall championship in an expected battle royale at Sta. Elena on Oct. 12.
The Cangolf ladies made full use of their hosting the last time out, drawing seven crucial points from two victories on Classes A and C and a third place finish in Class B in the penultimate leg last month.
Alabang, which got three points from a runner-up finish in Class A and a third-place effort in Class C, still leads the field with a 31-point aggregate heading into the final leg of the circuit featuring the top golfing ladies of the country’s premier clubs.
But with Canlubang just two points behind with 29 points, a down-to-the-wire finish is seen when the eight-leg, course-hopping series winds up at Sta. Elena.
Tagaytay Highlands, meanwhile, has assembled 18 points for third in the Modified Stableford scoring system.
Sta. Elena seized solo fourth with 11 points and is expected to likewise use its familiarity with the layout to launch its own final round charge for at least third place honors.
Manila Southwoods and Aguinaldo are tied for fifth with nine points.
Alabang, which led right from start at home then sustained its form in the six legs, hopes to draw the best from Class A players Rita Horan, Gerilyn Handog Verni Oledan and Finina Gorres as it tries to foil Cangolf’s final round attack.
Its Class B squad will be led by Videlyn Torralba, Edna Nguyen, BingBing Feliciano and Vivian Chua while Luarlene Barclay, Belinda Eberle, Ana Luisa Mendoza and Olive Pizarro will be the players to watch for the Muntinlupa-based squad in Class C.
Canlubang, on the other hand, is confident it can get the same firepower from the likes of Lina de Guzman, Marivi Laurel, Teresa Carpio and Vanessa Tsutsui to match Alabang’s talented crew in Class A.
Lea Suarez, Jeng Cacao, CherryAnn Lacson and Maricel Galicim will man Cangolf’s bid in Class C while the foursome of Recy Barrientos, Pamela Jimenez, Terry Parala and Googie Sanga will back up the team in Class B.
