MANILA, Philippines - Canlubang stamped its class at home and pooled seven points on two victories as it closed to within two points off Alabang in the penultimate leg of the the WGAP (Women’s Golf Association of the Phils.) circuit at the Canlubang Golf and Country Club in Laguna.
Lina de Guzman fired 41 points under the Modified Stableford system while Marivi Laurel, Teresa Carpio and Vanessa Tsutsui added 38, 35 and 34, respectively, as Cangolf beat Alabang by six points to capture the Class A crown worth another three points.
Lea Suarez (39), Jeng Cacao (37), CherryAnn Lacson (35) and Maricel Galicim (34) duplicated that feat by topping Class C with a 145 for a whopping 10-point romp over Sta. Elena, which had a 135.
Recy Barrientos (34), Pamela Jimenez (33), Terry Parala (31) and Googie Sanga (31) assembled a 129 to finish third behind Tagaytay Highlands (136) and Sta. Elena (135) in Class B.
That seven-point haul put Cangolf to within two points off Alabang, who settled for three points with a runner-up finish in Class A and a third-place effort in Class C for a 31-point aggregate heading into the final leg at Sta. Elena on Oct. 12.
Canlubang now has 29 points as it hopes to sustain its charge at Sta. Elena in their bid to snatch the overall crown from Alabang.
Tagaytay Highlands has 18 and Sta. Elena seized solo fourth with 11. Manila Southwoods and Aguinaldo are tied for fifth with nine points.
Alabang drew 38 points from Rita Horan, two 36s from Gerilyn Handog and Verni Oledan and 32 points from Finina Gorres for a 142 output in Class A. Aguinaldo nipped Sta. Elena in the countback to snatch third place with a 139.
Tagaytay Highlands leaned on Rosalie Heo (40), Totelle Dimson (33), Bern Wong (32) and Maripaz Domingo (31) as it edged Sta. Elena, 136-135, for Class B title.
