Abas rules Quezon City chess

MANILA, Philippines - Esmael Abas of the Philippine National Police bested a host of others to top the seven-round chess tournament staged by Chess for Quezon City Youth Development Inc. (ChessQC) at Ever-Gotesco Commonwealth over the weekend.

Gary Garcia finished second while Robert Cacho placed third in the tournament for 1950 national rapid rating.

Jerry Areque wound up fourth, followed by Romeo Soriano, Rick dela Peña, Clement Valledor, Kevin Mirano, John Xavier Verdun and Manolito Padrigone.

Jeremiah Alfonso and Vince Angelo Medina emerged the top kiddie players.

Meanwhile, ChessQC president Joey Carinan said it will hold a chess tournament every second Saturday of the month at Ever-Gotesco. The schedule: Oct. 12, 1850 NRR; Nov. 8, 2050 NRR and Dec. 13, open tournament.
