Wong, Horrigan rule Ford Cup

SUBIC, Philippines – Singaporean Marcus Wong and Filipino Bobby Horrigan split honors as they prevailed in separate races recently in the kickoff of the TRS-Ford Focus Cup at the Subic International Raceway here.

Wong’s effort to fly in from Singapore to compete in the race proved fruitful as he ruled the first race of this event supported by Ford Focus, Goodyear Racing, Standard Insurance, OMP, Discovery Suites, Yellow Cab, Aguila Auto Glass, Businessworld, C! Magazine, Freemuff, Dupont, Starbright body kits, Ultra Racing, Toptul, Orange Electronics, Rota Wheels, K& N, Unichip and Philippine Auto Club.

Coke executive Ding Dizon actually held the pole position after topping the qualifying but lost his lead as Wong, Finland’s Juha Roiha and Horrigan outmaneuvered him during the actual race.

Wong kept his grip of the lead from then to claim the checkered flag after the eight-lap race.

While the participants were cautious in the first race, the drivers were more aggressive in the afternoon, reversed-grid race with Dizon at the lead followed by Horrigan, Roiha and Wong.

Horrigan managed to squeak past Dizon at greenlight while Roiha and Wong quickly followed suit to stay close behind in second and third.

Rain added pressure as the action turned more intense with the top four drivers jockeying for positions, keeping the spectators at the edge of their seats.

But the excitement didn’t end there. Horrigan dominated almost throughout until the last lap where he and Roiha figured in a photo finish, prompting race officials to call a meeting to decide who won the race.

Replays showed Roiha crossed the finish line by a mere 12 inches ahead of Horrigan. However, Horrigan was declared the champion with Wong clinching second place as Roiha was slapped with a 10-second penalty for hitting two pylons.
