De Dios, Gutierrez dominate architects golf

MANILA, Philippines - Paul Henry De Dios came away with 58 points while Kado Gutierrez scored 56 points then nipped Darwin Averion in the countback to capture the Group I and II crowns, respectively, in the Architects Golf Club monthly tournament at the Eastridge Golf Club in Binangonan, Rizal recently.

De Dios, a 10-handicapper, made a gross 78 worth 58 points under the Molave scoring system to edge Rommel Martinez, who had 57 points from a gross 79, and rule the premier class in the monthly tournament organized by the Architects Golf Club. Boy Alcantara finished third with a gross 80 and 56 points.

Gutierrez, with a 19-handicap, fired a gross 89 worth 56 points then beat Averion in the countback with a net eagle to cop the Group II plum in the event sponsored by Boysen Paints, Atlanta Industries, Decopro, Inc., Emerald Vinyl, HCG, JME Supreme Int’l, Inc., Koten Enterprises, Monark, Moldex, Panasonic, Phils., Landlite Phils. Corp., Plas Excellence and Steel Network.

Averion, who had a net birdie, settled for runner-up honors after an 87 and 56 points while Henry Wee Ebol placed third with 54 points from a gross 91.

Sharing the spotlight was Antonio Sabater, who scored a hole-in-one on the 164-yard, No. 12. He used a Wilson Staff DHG-3 and a Top Flite ball in sinking the ace in the company of Danny Tabifranca, Dan Sabularse and De Dios. He went on to win the Group V title.

Meanwhile, UST beat the Sponsor team in the Interschool game, winning their best-of-three match play, 2-1, with victories at Valley’s South course last June and at Eastridge Golf Club this month. The Sponsor squad won at Orchard last July.

Willy Cruz turned in a gross 89 worth 59 points and eked out a one-point victory over Simeon Tan, who had 58 points from a gross 90, while Robert Ng Ong came in third with a gross 92 worth 56 points.

Mark Soriquez and Sabater both churned out 58 points to top the Group IV and V categories, respectively. Soriquez made a gross 94 to topple Eymard Agbing, who had a 98 worth 56 points, while Ed Casares finished third with 54 points from a gross 102.

Sabater, who had a gross 100, ran away with a two-point victory over Boy Roldan, who made a 102 worth 56 points while Mikee da Jose placed third with 52 points from a gross 106.
