Dragons take UCAA opener over Patriots

-

DASMARIÑAS , Philippines   – The Universal College Golden Dragons turned to Lester Reyes to repulse the La Salle-Dasmariñas Patriots, 79-76, yesterday in the opening of the eighth Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Ugnayang La Salle Gymnasium here.

Reyes, who delivered a game-high 17 points, the same as Mac Montilla’s, scored on a layup with 42.4 seconds to go as the defending champions moved to safer grounds at 78-73, en route to the win.

The Patriots made a final attempt to come close after a pair of charities from Kit Licudine and a split from newcomer Sam Plamera.

But the Golden Dragons held on to the lead after Cedric Matugas banged in another free throw and JV Ferreria intercepted an inbound pass by Jake Bautista as time expired.

Rico Rivera powered the Patriots with 32 points.

The Golden Dragons led, 71-62, in the last 4:20 through a Reyes’ layup when the Patriots fought back with a 5-0 spurt sparked by Ian Genova.

Genova’s four-point play with 6:20 allowed the Patriots to threaten at 67-71, with 2:30 left.

The Golden Dragons go for their second straight win when they play Colegio de Sta. Monica at 2:30 p.m. on Monday at the TIP Gymnasium in Quiapo, Manila.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Harry Angping made the ceremonial toss and was the guest of honor during the opener.
