MANILA, Philippines - The University of Manila Hawkettes completed their climb from last year’s worst team to become this year’s champion with an 86-41 rout of their last stumbling block, the CEU Lady Scorpions, recently in the NAASCU women’s competition at the UM gymnasium.
Swelley Morona topscored with 29 points and eight assists, Wendylyn Alvarez added 23 while Rossana Russ had a double-double 10 points and 15 rebounds in giving the Hawkettes their first title in the tournament.
The Hawkettes earlier crushed University of Makati (132-11), San Sebasian Cavite (121-17), defending champion AMACU (83-76) and St. Clare (96-62).
As a reward, UM EVP and team manager Ernesto Ll. De los Santos is giving the team a one-week stay in Baguio and at the Surfing Capital of the North – San Juan, La Uion.
The U hawkelets also remained on the lead in the junior division, beating the CEU Scorpions, 80-66, for their fifth straight win in Group B.
