Gilas ready to enlist Giles
MANILA, Philippines - The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is close to sealing a deal with CJ Giles that would make the 6-11 American center as its naturalized player for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team seeking a berth in the 2012 Olympic Games.
SBP executive director Noli Eala yesterday said Giles, member of the team that placed fifth in the 20th FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta two months ago, has already agreed to suit up with the squad but will still decide on what deal to take.
Eala said the SBP has offered Giles a one-year pact wherein the SBP will exercise the right of first refusal or a two-year contract wherein he will have an option to attend NBA summer camps and play in the NBA while seeing action as member of the RP team.
“CJ can try out and attend NBA summer camps, we have no problem with that,” said Eala. “But he must make himself available during critical times when we need him.”
The SBP has actually been communicating with Giles’ agent Chris Emens, who might go with Giles to Manila when the 23-year-old former Los Angeles Laker returns next week.
Giles will be a big help for the Rajko Toroman-mentored RP team following the decision of Japeth Aguilar to join the pros.
Giles, meanwhile, is expected to undergo a long, tedious process of naturalization before the Congress acts on his application.
“Our immigration lawyers have already prepared a plan,’’ said Eala. “It will not be easy but I’m confident that we can justify the naturalization of CJ.’’
Smart Gilas is also eyeing Fil-Am Chris Lutz, who will arrive tomorrow from the United States.
The 6-4 Lutz was scouted by the SBP during Smart Gilas’ Las Vegas training camp last May, impressing the coaching staff with his outside shooting and defensive game.
“We also want him (Lutz),” said Eala. – Joey Villar
