Teen jin emerges new Pinoy idol

MANILA, Philippines - More potential talents from the grassroots are likely to be tapped as the Pinoy Sports Idols returns for its 10th season with new partner Studio 23.

The sports reality television show being supported by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) will now be aired on a new timeslot at 9 a.m. every Saturday.

It recently concluded its successful ninth season that saw 14-year old taekwondo athlete Charizza Camille Alombro from the Diliman Preparatory School emerging as winner.

Alombro was with Pinoy Sports Idols executive producer Dexter Araquel in yesterday’s session of the PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch.

“It’s an advocacy TV show that goes around the Philippines in search of underprivileged but extremely talented young athletes,” said Araquel.

Every season, a field of 12 exceptional athletes representing different sports disciplines is individually featured in the show.

The list of 12 athletes will then be trimmed down to the final three, from whose rank comes the season winner.

 But the three athletes chosen, according to Araquel, will already be granted full college scholarship courtesy of Pagcor.

To date, the show has already granted 27 college scholarships to deserving young athletes.

Alombro bared in the session sponsored by Outlast Battery, Accel, Pagcor and Shakey’s, that she plans to take up accountancy in college.

The petite and charming fourth year high school student has been with the national junior team for two years now.

Like previous Pinoy Sports Idols winners, she was first spotted competing in the yearly Palarong Pambansa.

Competing as a flyweight, Alombro already had her share of international competitions by seeing action in the World Juniors Taekwondo Championships in Turkey and the 4th Korean international competitions, where she won two gold medals.

She first took up the sport when she was eight years old.
