MANILA, Philippines - One hundred twenty kids are playing in the first ever Philippine qualifying round for the US Kids World Championship starting today at the Player course of the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite.
Great Depot, Inc., the official distributor of US Kids Golf in the country, has teamed up with Orchard and the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines to stage the event that will feature boys and girls from ages 5 to 18.
The player in each age and gender group who meets the scoring requirement will be invited to compete in the US Kids Golf World Championship that will take place in Augusta, Georgia Aug. 6-8.
The top five finishers of each age and gender group will receive a medal for their accomplishments.
“We are very excited about this,” says Ui Mendoza, Philippine brand manager of USKG. “It is the first time that the Philippines will be holding such a prestigious event for our junior golfers from all around the country.”
There are two separate competitions, one for the regular US Kids World Championship for ages 12 and below and the other for US Kids Teen Championship for 13-18.
As observed by many avid amateur and professional golfers, Mendoza said that there is a dearth of young fresh talent in golf. “The golfing population is getting older and there is a need for young golfers to make their mark and grow the game,” she added.
