Wilson rallies Bombers past Stags

MANILA, Philippines – John Wilson fired a game-high 32 points as Jose Rizal U dealt San Sebastian College its first defeat in four games with an 81-75 overtime victory in the Filoil-Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup at The Arena yesterday.

Wilson took over for JRU in the second half, scoring 24 of his output, including 11 in the extra period where the Bombers outscored the Stags to fashion out the come-from-behind victory.

The win was JRU’s fourth against two losses as it stayed behind pacesetting La Salle (3-0) in Group B while SSC slid to joint third with Adamson with 3-1 slates.

Marvin Hayes also came up big by scattering seven of his 15 points coming in the last 15 minutes of the contest, which SSC controlled in the first three quarters.

But Wilson stepped up in the fourth and the rest backed him up with a tough defense to foil the Stags’ vaunted offense.

“Wilson has always been a scorer and he really helped us a lot in this game,” said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia.

Earlier, Letran drew firepower from the comebacking Rey Guevarra and RJ Razul as it downed National U, 72-61, to end a long skid.

Guevarra and Jazul, back in action after a brief training stint with the RP Developmental team, combined for 25 points as the Knights finally clinched a victory after five straight losses in Group A. – With report from contributor Celest Flores
