Lady Stags, Tigresses trip V-League foes

San Sebastian College overwhelmed Univ. of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu with its power game as it posted a lopsided 25-8, 25-9, 25-15 victory at the start of the quarterfinal round of the sixth Shakey’s V-League at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Laurence Ann Latigay delivered 16 kills for a 17-point output, Thai import Jaroensri Bualee tossed in 15 points while Rysabelle Devanadera added 13 points for the Lady Stags, who turned the 56-minute match into a virtual workout.

University of Santo Tomas, meanwhile, battled back from a set down to beat Far Eastern U, 19-25, 25-18, 25-7, 25-19, and join SSC in the lead in the early going of the single round phase where the top four teams will advance to the semis.

The Tigresses pounced on the Lady Tams’ anemic stint in the third set to gain the upperhand then finished off their rivals with a steady game in the fourth to clinch the victory in one hour and 16 minutes.

Guest players Mary Jean Balse and Michelle Carolino combined for 35 hits while skipper Aiza Maizo made seven blocks and finished with 13 points for the Tigresses, who are seeking their fourth championship in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

FEU, making its first-ever quarterfinal appearance, started out strong but faltered in the second set and never recovered from a poor performance in the third frame.

UST made a 9-1 run early in the fourth, turning a 6-7 deficit into a 15-8 lead although FEU fought back to within 13-16 by winning the five of the next six points.
