Dodgers match record home winning streak at 12
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers tied the modern major league record for the longest home winning streak to start a season, improving to 12-0 at Chavez Ravine with a 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League on Tuesday.
The defending NL West champions now share the mark with the 1911 Detroit Tigers, who accomplished the feat at Bennett Park the year before they moved into Tiger Stadium.
The Dodgers’ sixth straight victory made them a major league-best 20-8 overall, their best start since 1983.
Pitcher Jeff Weaver allowed just one run over five innings and struck out six in his first start in the big leagues since 2007 with Seattle.
The Dodgers scored all their runs in the first inning.
In St. Louis, Shane Victorino went 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs as Philadelphia beat St. Louis, 10-7, to go top of the NL East.
St. Louis cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth before Jason Werth answered with a three-run homer in the fifth.
The Phillies led three times by four runs, finally putting away the Cardinals in the seventh with two RBI singles.
In Miami, Brandon Phillips tied a career high with six RBIs as Cincinnati posted its fourth shutout in six games, downing Florida, 7-0.
Pitcher Edinson Volquez allowed only three hits in eight innings for Cincinnati. He extended a personal streak of 16 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings.
Phillips had three hits, including a three-run homer. He hiked his meager average from .205 to .226.
In Pittsburgh, Milwaukee notched its 17th straight win over Pittsburgh, an 8-5 win giving it the majors’ longest winning streak by one team over another in nearly 40 years.
The Brewers’ domination of the Pirates is the longest since Baltimore won 23 consecutive games against Kansas City across the 1969 and 1970 seasons.
J.J. Hardy drove in four runs on three hits. He was 3 of 27 before reaching base four times on two run-scoring singles, an RBI double and a walk to help Milwaukee open a 6-2 lead in the sixth.
In Chicago, pitcher Tim Lincecum allowed just four hits over seven innings, guiding San Francisco past Chicago Cubs, 6-2.
Bengie Molina hit a three-run homer for San Francisco.
Lincecum struck out seven in ending the Cubs’ four-game winning streak.
Resting five regulars against Lincecum, the 2008 NL Cy Young winner, the Cubs lineup featured six players who were in the minors as recently as 2007. (AP)
