China eyed as training hub for Pinoy athletes
MANILA, Philippines – China will remain the top training ground for Filipino athletes gearing up for international competitions as a quality alternative to more expensive countries like the United States and other Western nations.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping yesterday said the sports agency will send majority of the national team to train in China in preparation for the 2009 Southeast Asian Games slated Dec. 9-18 in Vientiane, Laos.
“We will send some of our athletes to train in China,” said Angping.
In fact, Angping will lead a small delegation to China in a three-city visit to meet with their Chinese counterparts and renew ties.
“We will go there upon the invitation of the Chinese Sports Ministry, we will explore all possibilities to give our athletes all the training they would need,” said Angping, who will be accompanied by Health Secretary Francisco Duque, PSC commissioner Joey Mundo and deputy executive director Cesar Pradas in the trip in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
One of these include tapping Chinese coaches to train the Filipino athletes here instead of sending RP athletes to train in the US or Europe.
“It’s also part of the plan,” said Mundo. “We will definitely send our athletes to China, the only thing that is not yet final is where and when and how many.” – Joey Villar
