Agra clinches Toby's 18-under title
MANILA, Philippines - Top seed Jessica Marie Agra clinched her first local title for the year with an easy 6-1, 6-0 demolition of Lis Magaway, 6-1, 6-0, in the premier girls 18 years-old-and-under of the Toby’s Prince Summer Tennis Festival at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 17-year-old Agra displayed her might against her unseeded foe to easily bag the crown in the week-long tournament presented by Toby’s Sports and Prince racquets and sponsored by Equipe, Polar Heart Rate Monitor, Thermos, Kontrol USA, Philta and Futures Tennis Foundation, and Action & Fitness Magazine.
Agra held serve and pounced on Magaway’s unforced errors to essay the win. She was credited with 120 local ranking points that went with the title.
Agra had a first-round bye before ousting Marila Ressurrecion, Louise Lopez and Shannin Olivarez.
The win not only duplicated her feat last year in this Grade 2 local event but also bolstered her preparations for the Lucena Open two weeks from now.
Third seed Marian Jade Capadocia, meanwhile, turned back Louise Lopez, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the girls’ 16-under title.
Capadocia earlier won the 14-under crown following a 6-1, 6-0 demolition of Angela Santiago.
Top seeds Maia Balce and Mimo Tomacruz likewise made it to the winners circle after slipping past separate foes to clinch the girls’ 12-under and unisex-10 under titles, respectively.
Balce had to go through a deciding set before turning back Samantha Um, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7, while Tomacruz also charged back from a second-set loss to beat fifth seed Bianca Cruz, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5.
Second pick Christian San Andres also rolled to an easy 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Ralco Dela Paz to grab the boys’ 12-under title.
The final slots in the boys’ 14-, 16- and 18-under were still being played at press time.
