Moorer's job: Throw out hangers-on

HOLLYWOOD – No, this ex-heavyweight champion, at 6-foot-2 and over 200 pounds, isn’t throwing his weight around the gym.

“That’s his job and he’s doing it,” said Wild Card Gym owner and chief Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach of his new assistant, three-time heavyweight champion Michael Moorer (1992-WBO, 1994-WBA and 1996-IBF).

By doing his job, Moorer has been labeled by some as rude and arrogant. But he’s not. If that’s how things ought to be done, then this 41-year-old lefty won’t hesitate doing it.

Fortunately, he hasn’t thrown anyone out of the gym yet – physically.

“If Freddie asks me to do it, I’m gonna do it,” Moorer told FIlipino scribes who now enjoy his blessings around the gym.

Next to his duties, foremost of which is to help mold Pacquiao into a better fighter, Moorer is also in charge of keeping the gym “strictly off-limits” to those with no business being around when Pacquiao trains.

“If you don’t belong here, then it’s time for you to go,” his loud voice fills the cramped sweatshop these days.

He was asked for his job description.

“I work for Freddie. I’m Freddie’s assistant. I aid in developing Manny and I do the things that are supposed to be done,” said Moorer, who retired after winning his last six fights, including a first-round stoppage of Shelly Gross in Dubai in February last year.
