MANILA, Philippines - PNP-National Headquarters-Quezon City drew with Local Water Utilities Administration-QC-B, 2-2, in the final round then nipped Mandaluyong City in the tiebreak to capture the crown in the 2009 National Inter-cities chess team championship at the Metro Town Hall in Tarlac City Wednesday.
Ali Branzuela humbled Richelieu Salcedo, Rolando Andador halved the point with Alcon John Datu and Horizon Villanueva split the point with Mari Joseph Turqueza for PNP-NHQ-QC, which emerged the only unbeaten team in the five-day, nine-round tournament with five wins and four draws for 14 match points.
PNP-NHQ-QC’s Edsel Montoya bowed to Jan Nigel Galan of LWUA.
Mandaluyong City also wound up with 14 points and shared the combined P160,000 purse with PNP-NHQ-QC.
Mandaluyong, led by GM Bong Villamayor and Allan Cantonjos, subdued LWUA-QC-F, 2.5-1.5, in the final round.
Villamayor defeated Haridas Pascua while Cantonjos toppled Leo Daylo Jr.
