Quezon City chessers post two wins for solo lead
MANILA, Philippines - Quezon City pulled off victories over Mandaluyong City, 3-1, and Local Water Utilities Administration-Quezon City-A, 2.5-1.5, to grab the solo lead in the fourth round of the National Inter-Cities and Municipalities chess team championship at the Metro Town Mall in Tarlac City yesterday.
GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. outduelled Dresden Olympiad veteran GM Bong Villamayor in their third round duel and Gary Legaspi trounced Jan Emmanuel Garcia to clinch the victories for Quezon City, which now has eight points.
Jerry Areque drew with Allan Cantonjos and Ilann Perez halved the point with Gary Garcia in the other two boards.
In the fourth round, Perez subdued Xavier John Verdun to clinch the win for Quezon City over LWUA-A.
Antonio halved the point with GM John Paul Gomez, so did Areque against Jose Aquino Jr. and Legaspi versus Rainier Labay.
Top seed Tagaytay City and LWUA-QC-F share second with seven points based on the match point style scoring system used by the organizing National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
Tagaytay edged Pasig-Marfori, 2.5-1.5, on victories by Raymond Salcedo and Rhoel Abelgas over Samson Lim and Marlon Roicafort, respectively.
