Clavecilla's record 62 sparks team romp
MANILA, Philippines - Iggy Clavecilla capped a week of fierce scoring with a tournament record 10-under-par 62 and steered his partnership with Mari Hechanova to the low gross plum even as Angie Co and Oliver Gan combined for the low net crown in the recent 14th Sta. Elena Cup in Cabuyao, Laguna.
Clavecilla followed up that 62 with a one-over 73 in his second round for 89 net Stableford points and with the 36-33 of Hechanova, the duo ran away with the low gross plum in the five-day tournament presented by Lexus and Omega.
Co, scoring 41 and 37, and partner Gan, a 6-handicapper who sizzled with 42 and 44, captured the overall plum with a combined net score of 164.
The Class A crown was won by Hedy See and daughter Hannah See-Sy, Lino Topacio and Edwin Gumila took the Class B title and Terry Capistrano-Manny Salgado snatched the Class C plum.
The runner-ups were Clavecilla-Hechanova in Class A, Gerry Zorilla-Arnold Jumalon in Class B and Antonio Ocampo-Gonzalo Ocampo in Class C.
Lexus Manila offered an IS 300 luxury sedan worth at least P2.9 million for a hole-in-one on the seventh and 17th holes for five days but no one from among the 570 players who played hit the jackpot.
Royal Caribbean, Baron Travel, Gatorade Tiger, Sta. Elena Properties Inc, Johnnie Walker, L’Oreal, Club Car, Starbucks, Primal Enterprises, Champion Detergent, Duty Free Philippines, RizGolf Marketing, Selecta Ice Cream, Novellino wines and Mizuno were the other major sponsors of the Sta. Elena Cup.
Sta. Elena’s board of directors led by Ambassador Bienvenido Tantoco, Bryan Cockrell, Edward Tiu, Bebo Quiros and Rico Tantoco graced the awarding ceremonies.
Aside from being one of the first major golf tournament exposures for Lexus, the Sta. Elena Cup also served as the launching pad for the Gatorade Tiger flavor.
