MANILA, Philippines - Kevin Anthony Sicat beat Mary Joyce Fuerte in the fifth and final round to top the juniors division of the Milo Checkmate chess clinic at St. Francis Square in Mandaluyong over the weekend.
The 13-year-old Sicat swept his five matches in an impressive performance by a junior beginner enrollee.
Stephen Pangilinan, 6, finished second with four points while Tristan Dandan and Aldwin del Rosariio finished tied for third.
Other age-group winners were Edward Manuel, Frances Sophia Manila and Timothy Litam (8-under); Justin Tan, Carlo Espino and Christopher Tan (10-under); Ralph Villaflor and Cyrey Geraldino (12-under).
All winners were awarded medals by the sponsoring Milo.
The winners in respective courses and sections were Jose Paolo Franco, Timothy Chin, John Patrick Garcia, Franz Josef Jaena, and Christopher Tan (Preparatory 1); Joaquin Anselmo Aceron, Joseph Martial Juachon, Heinrich Ryan Torres and Justin Tan (Prep 2); Ronel Mendoza (Prep 3); del Rosario and Sicat (junior beginner) and Carmella Ysabel Galve (senior beginner).
The event is part of the Milo-sponsored Checkmate development program to determine the students’ performance after a series of chess lessons.
The next clinic will start next week at the Whiz Child Kindergarten- (daily 8:30-11:30 a.m. April 13-18); MWF 8:30-11:30 a.m. April 13-25 - St. Stephen’s High School; Colegio de Sta. Rosa-Makati; La Salle Greenhiils; Camella School in Las Piñas; and St. Mary’s Academy in Kalookan. MWF 1:30-4:30 p.m. are St. Francis Square; Flos Carmelli Institution; Little Presidents Learning Palace in Mendiola; Good Shepherd Christian School in Mandaluyong; Maria Montessori Foundation in Ayala, Alabang and Jollibee-Trinoma.
