Red Oilers trounce Manila 5, eye sweep
MANILA, Philippines - Quezon, with Hafer Mondragon on the firing end, repeated over Manila, 78-72, to move within a win from sweeping their quarterfinal duel in the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II Playoffs at the Quezon Convention Center in Quezon last Sunday.
Mondragon, a product of Letran College, went six out of six from the field, including five triples, as the Red Oilers led from start to finish to seize a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series.
The Red Oilers, bucking the absence of Jorel Canizares and Ramsey Williams, raced to 20-7 lead after the first period then sustained their pace in the next three en route to the victory.
Mondragon finished with 17 points while Mark Magsumbol had 12 points.
Center Bryan Faundo and guard Billy Moody led the Capitals with 24 and 16 markers, respectively.
Meanwhile, Game Two between the top seed Misamis Oriental and the eighth seed GenSan will be held tonight at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.
