Search for billiard stars under way

MANILA, Philippines - The 2009 Billiard Stars Search starts today at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City with Division D players going into competition beginning at 10 a.m.

The only divisional championships in the country today, the event features four divisions of players of varying abilities: Division A, comprising the very best players; Division B, featuring up-and-coming players and veterans; Division C, comprising top-rated pool enthusiasts and amateurs; and Division D, comprising players new to the sport.

Hosted by Star Billiards and BSCP treasurer Sebastian Chua, Billiard Stars Search is sanctioned by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines.

Trophies and cash prizes are at stake in the tournament with the Division A champion getting 40,000; Division B champion, P20,000; Division C champion, P10,000; and Division D champion, P5,000. Prizes will be given up to eighth place in each division.

Among the A players who will be vying for the top prizes are Asian games gold medalist Antonio Gabica, Philippine national champion Marlon Manalo, World Ten-ball semifinalist Demosthenes Pulpul, and RP junior champion and world juniors runner-up Jericho Banares.
