MANILA, Philippines - University of Sto. Tomas, School of St. Anthony, Letran, and Ateneo shared honors when the 2009 Primovit 3-on-3 Baller Battle tournament ended last weekend at the Ateneo high school covered courts in Katipunan.
It was a UAAP vs NCAA face-off in the boys junior division as the Fantastic 4 team, composed of players from the Thomasian’s UAAP junior team, played against members of the Letran Squires team as both schools used the opportunity to hone their junior players for next school year’s UAAP and NCAA hostilities.
In the end, UST, taking advantage of the fouling out of one of Letran’s players, edged out Letran, 11-9, to take the title in the tournament organized by the Futures Sports & Events and also sponsored by Philips Peripherals & Accessories, Gatorade, Purefoods TJ Hotdogs, and JR & R Distributors.The champion team was composed of Kyle Neypes, Cederic Labing-isa, and Jezreel Jimenez.
The girls side had School of St Anthony, emerging on top for the first time, defeating Diliman Preparatory School 12 - 7 with Sheerose Luna leading her team to victory, both teams were undefeated in the elimination round.The other members of the champion team were Marian Mejia, Meg Gepilano, and Danica Valientes.
Letran outshot Ateneo from the stripe after the game ended at 9 - 9 when the buzzer ended, final score was 12 - 10 in favor of Letran who was led by best player awardee Kenneth Alas joined by teammates Ivan Villanueva, Ace Bagsit, and Kevin Malveda.
The mini division had home team Ateneo beating Xavier 11 - 8 to win the championship of the tournament that was also supported by Cool Choice Juice Drink, Captain Bawang, and Fruitini Juice Veggie Drink. A total of 62 teams joined the tournament that saw Primovit Multi vitamins Product manager Renz de Leon and tournament director Tyrone Limon awarding the prizes to the winning teams.
