Arcano tops PSA golf
Jong Arcano of Inquirer Golf won top honors in the first Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) President’s Cup of golf at the long Villamor lay-out in Pasay City.
Arcano fired a net level 72 and nipped fellow Inquirer scribe Musong Castillo by a shot in the centerpiece division of the event presented by Makisig Network and backed by the PBA and its teams.
Castillo had two birdies to pip Philippine STAR sports editor Lito Tacujan in the countback, while Inquirer sports editor Teddyvic Melendres shot a Systems 36 net 78 and won the Class B crown with plenty to spare.
Dante Navarro of The STAR was the runner-up in Class B after an 83, with veteran broadcaster Ed Picson checking in third with an 85.
The event was supported by the Games and Amusements Board, Talk ‘N Text, San Miguel Beer, Rain or Shine, Sta. Lucia, Air21, Purefoods. Barangay Ginebra, Alaska and Dickies Underwear.
The 18-hole event took on a very competitive atmosphere, with the Sponsors’ Division title also going down-to-the-wire between Talk ‘N Text assistant coach Virgil Villavicencio and Club Marinduque owner Felix Cortez.
Villavicencio shot a net 72 and went on to win the championship via a countback over Cortez, with Philippine Olympic Committee spokesperson and former Gintong Alay head Joey Romasanta finishing third just a stroke behind.
PSA president Aldrin Cardona of the Tribune thanked all the sponsors for their support and promised a bigger and better edition next year.
