Southwoods foils TCC sweep bid

-

BAGUIO – The Country Club blasted away the competition in the Fil Championship division with a 94-point romp over Eastridge but Manila Southwoods foiled the former’s sweep bid when it scored a come-from-behind win in the Am Championship at the close of the Fil-Am Men’s Golf Invitational here yesterday.

After posting a whopping 32-point lead in the first round in its first-ever appearance in the annual championship, The Country Club never got threatened, cruising its way to victory in the next three days to finish with a 558-point aggregate after a 128.

Ferdinand Aunzo, the reigning national champion, churned out a 34-point performance under the Stableford scoring system and went on to capture the individual crown with 165 points.

Anthony Fernando and Rufino Bayron each tossed in 32 points while Antonio Asistio added 30 points for the ICTSI-backed TCC squad. Dante Becierra didn’t count with a 26.

Eastridge closed out with 106 points for 464 while Mizuno placed third with a 441 after a 105.

Manila Southwoods, on the other hand, battled back from six points down and won by 13 points over The Country Club, which led in the first three days only to sputter in the face of the Carmona-based squad’s sizzling final round charge.

Southwoods pooled a 143 and wound up with a 518 total for a 13-point victory over TCC, which wavered with a 124 for a 505.

Chepe Dulay fired a two under 67 at John Hay worth 38 points while former national team mainstay Erwin Vinluan and Jikjik Abdon made 36 points each and Wolen Superal 33 points. Tristan Tabanas had 26 points and did not count.
