Tananta cops title in all-Indon tennis finale

Lavinia Tananta of Indonesia defeated compatriot Ayu-Fani Damayanti, 6-1, 6-4, yesterday to reign in Week One of the Holcim International Tennis Federation Women’s Circuit at the Rizal Tennis Center.

The fourth-seeded Tananta, ranked 698th in the world, dominated Damayanti with her solid game to fashion out the straight-set win and rule the first of the circuit’s two legs.

“We often see each other. I just kept my focus all throughout the game because she’s (Damayanti) really tough,” Tananta said.

She pocketed $1,568 and gained six ranking points in the circuit.

“She’s (Tananta) more experienced than me. She played a lot of international tournaments and it showed in our game,” said Damayanti.

Tananta made it a twin romp after she teamed up with Jessy Rompies in humbling second seed Kao Shao-Yuan of Chinese Taipei and Zheng Jun-Yi of China, 6-1, 5-7 (10-8), for the doubles title late Saturday. - Joey Villar
