Galve shocks Aussie WIM

-

Carmella Ysabel Galve upset WIM Narelle Szuveges of Australia in 2008 Elwood Bendigo Open Chess Championship in Melbourne, Australia recently.

Galve outlasted Szuveges in a bishop vs knight endgame, fashioning out the win after 97 moves.

But the Filipino bet failed to sustain her momentum, blowing two winning chances and finishing with 2.5 points with two wins and one draw in the seven-round tournament.

Other Checkmate players who saw action were Paul Adrian Manila of Montessori de Manila (2.5 points) and Jose Mari Galvez of Muntinlupa Science High School (1.5 points). Their trip, part of Milo-sponsored Checkmate training program, was aimed at gaining exposure abroad.

The other backers were the Office of PNP chief, ex-mayor Rony Ronquillo of Sto. Tomas, Pampanga, Auction in Malinta Inc., Divine Light Academy-Las Piñas City. Rep. Cynthia Villar, Las Pinas Councilor Steve Miranda, office of Senate President Manny Villar, Muntinlupa Mayor Aldrin San Pedro, Philippine Sports Commission and National Chess Federation of the Phils.
