Noguit gains q’final in Asian soft tennis

MUNGYEONG, Korea – Samuel Noguit registered his best-ever international ranking following a Top 8 finish in the singles event of the sixth Asian Soft Tennis Championships Thursday here at the Mungyeong Municipality claycourts.

Noguit upset heavily favored Li Yi-Long of China, 4-2, to gatecrash the quarterfinal round before bowing to eventual third placer Korean Lee Jong-Woo, 0-4. Kim Dong-Hoon of the host country downed an injured Shinohara Hidenori of Japan, 4-1, to capture the gold medal.

The 30-year-old Noguit, who reached the second round of the World championships in Anseong, Korea last year, had earlier trounced Shyam Dagat of India, 4-0, and Ronald Mario of Indonesia, 4-1, to gain a crack at Li whom the Filipino edged in an exciting 20-minute baseline match.

“The tactical approach and technique in training program by coach Jovy Mamawal and Mike Enriquez are the reasons why I made it to Top 8 ,” said Noguit.

Mikoff Mandurio made short work of Singroly Rahul of India, 4-1, to register the only other win in the weeklong Asian soft tennis nestfest.
