Camacho blasts Pole in world youth chess

VUNG TAU, Vietnam – Cheradee Chardine Camacho made it three wins in a row by beating WFM Anna Iwanow of Poland in the fifth round of girls 14 years-and-under in the 2008 World Youth Chess Championships at the Vung Tau Sports Center here Thursday.

The 14-year-old high school student from Agoo, La Union posted her fourth win in five matches to vault into a share of fourth-ninth places with four points, a full point behind WIM Rout Padmini of India.

Camacho’s sixth-round opponent is No. 13 seed WFM Marsel Efroimski of Israel. 

Fellow 14-under campaigner Jan Jodiyln Fronda of Letran College crushed Ani Kuronova of Belarus to move into a tie for 19th with 3.5 points.

Fronda lost her opening-day match by default but came back strong to win three of her next four matches.

Not as fortunate was Cherry Ann Mejia, who bowed to Maria Gevorgyan of Armenia also in the girls 14-and-under.

Mejia remained in the lower half of the standings with only two points.
