Mexican trainer says Pacman not fit for 147lb

- Abac Cordero -

Mexican trainer Nacho Beristain said Manny Pacquiao will get a “tremendous beating” when the Filipino superstar locks horns with Oscar dela Hoya on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas.

For the first time in their respective careers, Beristain and Dela Hoya are working together against the tested tandem of Pacquiao and his American trainer, Freddie Roach.

Beristain told DZSR radio program “Sports Chat” that he sees Pacquiao sliding back to the 135-pound division after the fight scheduled at the MGM Grand.

Beristain thinks that Pacquiao will not be able to carry his punch against bigger, taller and stronger fighters like Dela Hoya. Their coming fight is set at 147 pounds.

“After what will happen on Dec. 6, Manny Pacquiao will be more than willing to move down to 135 or 130 because he is going to get a tremendous beating,” Beristain told “Sports Chat.”

Beristain knows what he’s saying, since he’s been with 16 world champions in his almost 40 years in the business. Among his present wards are the Marquez brothers, Juan Manuel and Rafael.

Pacquiao defeated Marquez in a very close fight earlier this year, and wrested the WBC super-featherweight (130 pounds) crown from the crafty Mexican counter-puncher.

Pacquiao never got to defend the title. Instead, he moved up to the lightweight class (135 pounds) and knocked out the WBC champion, David Diaz, last June 28 at Mandalay Bay.

Pacquiao is moving up once more, and said recently that he plans to stay on at 140 or 147 pounds regardless of the next result. At 140, he may fight British superstar Ricky Hatton next year.

But Beristain thinks that won’t happen because fighting Dela Hoya (5’10 1/2”) will make Pacquiao (5’ 6”) realize that he’s not fit to fight in the welterweight class.

Of course, Pacquiao will try to prove him wrong.
