MVP Ekwe focuses on SBC bid for history

San Beda’s Sam Ekwe gets his second MVP trophy in the NCAA today but his focus will be on the Lions’ shot at the third straight crown against the Jose Rizal Bombers at the Araneta Coliseum.

“My focus will be on the championship more than anything else,” the 6-9 Ekwe told The STAR yesterday.

The 2006 rookie MVP and Lagos, Nigeria native will be named MVP after statistical leader Jason Ballesteros of San Sebastian was disqualified following the Stags’ failure to advance to the Final Four.

Ekwe pooled 312 points with averages of 15.1 points, 13.6 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.2 steals in the elimination round.

Actually, Ekwe was on his way to winning back-to-back MVP last year but was also disqualified after committing a flagrant foul on a Perpetual Help player, enabling Mapua’s Kelvin dela Peña to clinch the coveted individual plum.

Ekwe, however, used that as a learning experience to re-claim the MVP this season.

“No man can obtain anything without God behind him, meaning that a good thing is a gift from Almighty, it is marvelous in our eyes,” said Ekwe, playing his last season with the Lions.
