Golden Boy enlists Marquez trainer
With the help of Nacho Beristain, Oscar dela Hoya will try to emulate Juan Manuel Marquez when he climbs the ring against Manny Pacquiao in December.
Dela Hoya said he watched the two fights between Marquez and Pacquiao. In those fights, boxing’s Golden Boy said he saw how Pacquiao can be beaten.
Dela Hoya, in a report posted at www.insidesports.ph, said he’s been “analyzing some of the tactics used by Marquez that gave Pacquiao so much trouble.”
And the 35-year-old superstar plans to do the same against Pacquiao.
To begin with, Dela Hoya has tapped Beristain as his trainer, instead of Floyd Mayweather Sr., for the Dec. 6 “Dream Match” with the Pinoy southpaw.
Beristain has trained 16 world champions in close to 40 years in the business. And the list includes the Marquez brothers, Juan Manuel and Rafael, Ricardo Lopez, Daniel Zaragoza and Gilberto Roman.
“Obviously I have to be smart. I have to use my jab. I have to be rangy in that ring, just the way Juan Manuel Marquez did against him in both of their fights. He was using that long jab.
“He was using those long right hands. I just have to make sure that Pacquiao, when he comes in with his explosive style and his hard punches, [that] I have to make sure that I have my hands up,” Dela Hoya told www.insidesports.ph.
Beristain was at Marquez’ corner when he fought Pacquiao last March, and the trainer from Mexico City had nice words for the Pinoy champ.
“We know that Filipino fighters are very good. We respect Pacquiao. We respect his style,” he said.
